Aga Khan is the first microfinance agency that plays a significant role in supporting the rural economy in Kenya by providing Food and Agro-Processing services. For example, Frigoken provides agricultural extension services to 35,000 Kenyan bean farmers. The beans are processed and exported to European markets. Loans are also provided to the farmers by the Agency to assist them with financial needs that arise prior to receiving harvest revenues. The Coastal Rural Support Programme (CRSP) under Aga Khan foundation for rural development in Kenya has been working in semi-arid, marginalised rural areas of Coast Province since 1997 offering support services to enterprises dealing on bee-keeping by training para-professionals who will later train community members on bee-keeping, honey production, harvesting hives and assist the management. To add on that, CRSP carries out market assessments, promotes goat and poultry rearing - the process involves indigenous free-range poultry as an income generating activity. To ensure the success of these enterprises, CRSP trains community animal first aiders (CAFAs) to support communities in the care of their poultry.
